Assisting With Homeless Camp Relocation:
In May 2021, residents in the Cleveland Avenue homeless camp were notified by the Huntsville Police Department that they had 6 months to vacate the property due to drainage construction. At that time, approximately 60 people were staying at the Cleveland Camp. Through the efforts of First Stop, the Huntsville Police Department, and several homeless advocacy groups, the population residing at the camp is less than 20 people currently. We expect the remaining residents to vacate the property by the 1st of October.
During September, First Stop’s staff and volunteers have outreach teams going multiple times each week to the Cleveland Camp to assist the remaining individuals in finding emergency shelter or permanent housing. Through strong partnerships with the Salvation Army and the Downtown Rescue Mission, First Stop will work to find a safe place for individuals to move temporarily if permanent housing cannot be secured prior to the camp closure. First Stop’s case managers are dedicated to finding sustainable, independent housing for our homeless community.
