Want to make a big impact on the homeless community, but aren’t sure where to start?
For some, giving back means dropping off food, clothing or other comfort items at the city’s homeless camps. For others, it means bringing propane tanks to help homeless residents stay warm in the elements. Although the intent is always good, First Stop Executive Director Tim Davis said propane tanks are dangerous and pose hazards to the community.
“The city of Huntsville has many kindhearted and generous people who want to help those in need,” Davis said. “As Huntsville grows, the needs of its homeless population are also changing, and what one group needs today could be entirely different tomorrow. We ask that anyone interested in serving the homeless reach out to First Stop and other agencies directly to determine what and where the greatest needs are.”
Davis advises against donating propane tanks because they can easily malfunction, causing an explosion and increasing the chance that someone nearby will be seriously or fatally injured. If you’re an individual or a business looking to give back, contact First Stop today to learn how you can help the homeless in more constructive ways.
“There are so many ways to support our mission,” Davis said. “With your assistance, we can reach more homeless residents and help them get back on their feet for good.”
