First Stop's mission is to pave a continuous path from homelessness to independent, sustainable living for our clients.
Many of our clients have endured enormous amounts of pain including sexual, emotional and physical abuse, rape, human trafficking, mental health issues and substance abuse. Our clients are as diverse as the trauma that plagues them, which is why we do not believe in a one-size fits all approach. We provide individualized case management that creates a path to independence.
We encounter our clients in our facility and in the spaces where they camp, we connect them with them with necessary services and offer to aid with a plan to achieve empowerment and stable and independent living.
Outreach is an important part of the work we accomplish at First Stop, Inc. First Stop sponsors Encounter Teams that visit homeless camps in Huntsville each week bringing critical aid, building relationships, and promoting the resources offered at our Stokes St. facility. We distribute personal items and coordinate with local service providers to deliver needed care. This opens the door to greater interaction and a more customized care and is the first step on the path we offer.
Organizations can support this mission by collecting items for distribution by our Encounter Groups.
A list of necessary items may be found at the link below. Kits of personal items for our clients are needed. Dental care, personal care along with sunblock, bug repellent and feminine products are a few of the items needed.
Each week, First Stop serves approximately 600 meals, provides 100 hot showers, 50 bus passes, and numerous personal services like mail assistance, transportation, and laundry access. By building personal relationships, we connect the homeless community with necessary services and they get a chance to know our case managers--an an important step on the road to independence and empowerment.
Services we provide include: meals, basic health care, mail services, laundry services, aid obtaining appropriate medication and transportation help.
We also open our facility for support group meetings, and education to help our Day Center Clients and Case Managed Clients.
