Tim Davis has been involved with First Stop for nearly seven years, but his work with the homeless community spans over four decades. In 1980, Tim was asked at church to lead a project to feed homeless people on Waikiki. Since then, he has been actively involved in several homeless services programs and nonprofits.
He joined the First Stop Board of Directors in 2016 and has served in a variety of roles, including volunteer General Manager and Board President (where he currently serves). During his time at First Stop, Tim has helped to restructure the organization’s goals, vision, business management, and personnel.
He has learned a lot from working with the homeless community, but one of the most important things is not to believe stereotypes.
“Each person is different, comes from a different set of circumstances, and is trying to get along while shouldering different needs, encumbrances, and capabilities,” Tim says. “Take each homeless person where he or she is.”
Tim is passionate, dedicated, and always looking for ways to make a difference. To those who are looking to get involved he says:
“Homelessness is very complicated. There are no easy or quick answers. But before venturing out to help, talk to the non-profit homeless service providers. Find out what they are doing that is working. Look for ways that your personal or group’s desires to help can be added to or blended with the projects that are indeed moving homeless people to better life situations.”
Thank you, Tim, for everything you do. First Stop is lucky to have you!
